Our Story

It takes a village to raise a child.

Single Family Living (SFL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in the year 2013 in Michigan by a single parent, Jeri Hunley (Founder). Ms. Hunley was faced with isolation and preconceived stereotypes from society due to her marital status. Ms. Hunley realized that statistically, children from single parent homes are more likely to grow up in a life of crime, poverty, and lack of quality education. Ms. Hunley was determined to do something about being another statistic and strived for higher education for herself. However, she did not stop and think about herself but she thought about others in her situation.  

As a passionate single mom, our founder understands the trials & tribulations; the temporary setbacks, overcoming-the-odds, sacrifice, hoping for understanding and wanting the best for your children. Ms. Hunley is a true testament to "not give up & defy all odds against you!"

SFL began on a journey of helping children from single parent homes; learning the importance of education, positive mentorship, mental health awareness, affordable housing, and STEM courses by providing parenting workshops for single parents & their children ages K-12 and beyond. Over the years, we have provided over 8500 events and impacted thousands of children from single parent homes, throughout our service area which includes the Detroit Metro area. We shared our expertise and collaborated with organizations in the Flint/Saginaw area, Lansing area & Toledo Ohio region which has resulted in positive outcomes for thousands of families due to their dedication to helping others achieve success through education. At Single Family Living, we are devoted to helping single parents and their children live their best lives. We do this by empowering them with the knowledge, resources, and support they need to overcome the challenges of being a single parent. Try as we might make things better for our children when they are growing up, we still have obstacles to overcome before reaching our goal, and the goal is for them to be successful adults in society without a life of crime. We want our children to know that we care about them and they can be successful with determination, dedication, and consistency.

Single Family Living is committed to serving those who need it most: children in under-resourced communities who do not have access to quality education, due to economic and/or social barriers. Our vision is to reduce the crime rates that stalk our children living in poverty-stricken single-parent homes. We provide children with an opportunity to learn through various educational programs that focus on literacy, math, and science while also providing them with support services such as tutoring and mentorship programs; as well as community outreach events aimed at engaging families within their community.
