Spectrum Autism Support Group - Special Education Internship Track
Unpaid | Flexible Schedule | In-Person & Hybrid Opportunities Available

Spectrum Autism Support Group offers a meaningful internship opportunity for college and high school students pursuing studies in Special Education, Disability Studies, Psychology, or related fields. Interns will gain valuable hands-on experience supporting individuals with autism and developmental disabilities, while also contributing to inclusive community programs that uplift families and caregivers.

This internship track is closely connected with our affiliated organization, Social Skills Today, which provides therapeutic and recreational programming through camps and clubs designed to build social, communication, and life skills for individuals of all ages with autism. Interns may have opportunities to directly support these enriching programs during seasonal camps and weekly club sessions.

Internship Opportunities May Include:

• Direct Program Support – Assist during social skills groups, summer camps, family events, and respite care programs designed for children, teens, and adults with autism.
• Individualized Support Strategies – Observe and help implement behavior and communication support plans in collaboration with staff and trained volunteers.
• Activity Adaptation & Accessibility – Modify recreational or educational activities to support sensory, social, and physical needs of participants.
• Family Engagement – Support caregivers during events and help connect them with available resources.
• Training & Development – Participate in or assist with volunteer and staff training focused on neurodiversity and inclusive practices.
• Administrative Support – Help with data entry, documentation of participant needs, and coordination of event logistics.

Ideal Candidates:

• High school juniors/seniors or college students studying Special Education, Disability Studies, Psychology, or a related field
• Compassionate individuals with a strong desire to work with individuals with developmental differences
• Patient, flexible, and collaborative team players with strong observation and communication skills
• Interested in gaining real-world experience that complements academic coursework and supports future careers in education, therapy, or advocacy

Internships are unpaid but provide rich, hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and a valuable opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. Spectrum proudly supports interns from Georgia Gwinnett College, Gwinnett Tech, and other institutions seeking meaningful community engagement.
